Tenants Guide to Dundee

Often overlooked in favour of Glasgow and Edinburgh, the City of Discovery has been quietly reinventing itself over the past 15 years. Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city (the aforementioned Glasgow and Edinburgh are first and second respectively; Aberdeen is third), Scotland’s second most densely populated area, and the 51st most populous area in the UK.

It has enjoyed success as a port city since the 12th Century, with a number of thriving industries developing around this. Dundee was said to have been built on the “three Js” - Jute, Jam (James Keiller and Sons, who pioneered commercial marmalade production, was founded in 1795) and Journalism (DC Thomson & Co., publishers of The Beano and The Dandy, remains the largest employer in the area outside of the health and leisure industries.)

Today’s economy has a decidedly modern flavour, with biomedical and biotechnology startups popping up, and an established IT and video game sector producing notable titles such as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto.

With over £1bn being spent in regenerating the City of Dundee, it has fast become one of the UK’s most ambitious and modern destinations. With a student population of over 20,000, Dundee has become one of the UK’s most popular further education locations. And for many students, graduates, and young professionals, the City Centre has everything you’d need and more when it comes to city living.

With its late 19th century architecture and wide Victorian streets, there are affordable modern apartments and traditional tenements that put you in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from the offices of some of the major employers in the area. The main campus of Abertay University is also to be found in the centre of Dundee, not to mention a plethora of popular bars, restaurants, and theatres.

And the regeneration project, which will include the V&A Dundee museum of design slated to open in 2018, continues to transform the once thriving docks into one of Western Europe's most significant waterfronts, connecting the centre with the River Tay.

There’s also little in the way of traffic congestion in the city, thanks to a successful car sharing initiative, while the main train station connects you to Scotland’s other major conurbations with ease.

The Jewel in the Crown

Once referred to as “the richest square mile in Europe” during the 19th century, the suburb of Broughty Ferry is now known as “the jewel in Dundee’s crown.” High praise indeed, and not without merit; it was also recently named the nicest neighbourhood in Scotland.

Once a prosperous fishing and whaling village, today it embraces its reputation as a picturesque seafront esplanade. Relaxed and tranquil, it’s the perfect counterpoint to the busier City Centre, surrounded by some of the best sightseeing, fishing, and golf courses the country has to offer.

If the City Centre is tailor made for those a bit wet behind the ears, then Broughty Ferry is perfect for older professionals and those with families. With three primary schools in the area, all feeding into one of the top secondary schools in Scotland, this is the ideal place to raise a family.

And with its train station connecting residents to Dundee and further afield, you are never too far from the hustle and bustle if you need a break from the peace and quiet.
