Inverness has an oceanic climate. Due to its sheltered location Inverness is one of the driest areas in Scotland. Average annual rainfall is 732mm. Summer temperatures range between 16 – 19C, with winter temperatures averaging between 1 – 2C
In 2000 city status was granted to the Town of Inverness, and letters patent were taken into the possession of the Highland Council by the convener of the Inverness area committee.
